The Department of Communication Systems was founded by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Firoz Kaderali in 1986. The department offers seven classes in the field of modern communication technology and cryptography as well as several seminars and practical training for graduate students.

ILIAS
The web-based learning management system ILIAS is developed under the General Public Licence within an Open Source software project. Thus the software is free of charge. The project is managed at the University of Cologne, as well as main parts of the software are developed in Cologne.

Today ILIAS is used by schools, universities and for further training all around the world. The System is availabel in 16 languages. The user and developer community reaches from Norway to Argentina and Indonesia and is open to private and public contributors.
